It is unusual compared with the previous series. I found Genesis had a much darker theme to it. Maybe too dark for a juvenile western audience? A western dub would probably loose the feel of story.

I find watching with subs somehow more enjoyable. I love the sound of the japanese language. And the way the actors portray their characters can get lost in translation. Ive seen Chaotic Centurys first 15 episodes with subs and i prefer it to the dubs. It feels more real?!

Another bonus i found to subs was as a grown man in my late 30s(!) watching jap anime can cause questioning looks from those around me! Having subs on with the japanese dub on no one could understand what I was watching. I could watch Zoids in public, down the pub and not be looked at like I was some kind of ravin' fucktard!

Your right gender reversal/swap is more and more common place these days ( or they're happier to be open about it now) I work as a night club/rave Dj and I meet a huge variety of people. Some of them you wouldn't want to bet money on which way they play!! Each to their own, whatever floats your boat n all that :)

This is actually extremely common. I know 5 different ladies who prefer to be referred to in a masculine manner, or even pretend to be men online, but are still interested in women. What a person prefers to identify with does not always line up with what they're interested in as far as relationships go. Sexuality is not nearly as clear cut as "You're a femine guy so you're gay" or "You're a masculine women so you're a lesbian". Switching gender roles becomes more and more common in today's day and age, especially when you can change things around so easily over the internet. When Gotoshi says that they can be called a girl or a boy, I don't think it was in a "I want to be a man!" case (if s/he is a girl), but more that s/he thought Garaga was awesome and said it in more of a "I'm whatever you want me to be" kind of thing, which isn't an uncommon attitude when you're that taken with someone.

You'd also be surprised how often female characters are voiced by men, and how many male characters (like Ruuji) are voiced by women! The fun fact of voice acting is that it doesn't have to be gender specific casting.

I guess the main question here is, was the gender actually officially stated anywhere? Seeing as to how the fan subs aren't always that accurate, and completely change some things around depending on which group was working on them.

Is Gotoshi a girl? Well if she was indeed a she but wanted to be a man then she would at a guess be lesbian. As such would show more interest in the rest of her gang than Garaga.

If he was a he and a homosexual acting girly then the crush on Garaga would surely make more sense. Maybe?!

It just seems unlikely that a straight woman would not mind being refered to in a masculine way and yet still fancy butch men. Thats how it looks to me anyhow. I could be wrong I could be right, who knows :) Also the voice actor for Gotoshi is male and the character is listed as being male.

As for these subjects not making it through to western dubs, I was talking to a bud last night on the matter. He seems to think its as simple as the fact western dubs are only aimed at kids regardless of how adult the content was in the japan original.

I think if there was a market the Viz company wouldn't have a problem with content. You only have to read an old Viz comic to see they dont have a problem with anything!

Actually, I think the Gotoshi character was a female with a touch of masculinity. When he/she is first shown flirting with Garaga, the English subtitles read "you can call me {Japanese word 1} or {Japanese word 2}", and then a heading that usually appears at the top of the screen to explain Jap words to English audiences reads "{Japanese word 2} = boy" shortly before showing Garaga's irked expression, which might suggest Gotoshi is a girl who doesn't mind being called a boy. That's that I think, at least, given that the members of Muteki-Dan are all supposed to be girls, with the exception of the leader's brother (who is clearly straight).

Well, there are series with homosexual themes or undertones that do get dubbed (take for example Strike Witches, Girls und Panzers, Uppotte... pretty much anything with a large cast of females). Though not by Viz, I assume. Likely, what they would have done, is made him "not gay". As in make him a womanizer, flirty, or anything else to establish he is straight.

It happened with Salior Moon, with the two gay characters. Not only were they labeled "relatives", but the dub also included random lines about their having, or had, boyfriends. Not sure if Genesis would handle it to that extreme, but yeah, it be something to that effect.

Hi all! I've recently edited the Zoids Genesis, Gotoshi section. In the anime he is portrayed as homosexual. Now I realise Genesis will probably never receive an official western Dub, if they where going to they would have done so by now. But it got me thinking how would they of gotten around the gay issue with their strict polocies? Sexual content of any variety let alone the gay variety never makes it through to the western dubbs.

Utterly pointless debate I know, but my first blog has to be about something, so why not this :)
